Career: Alexei Kovalev is a coach, executive, and a former professional ice hockey player. Currently, he is the head coach of HC Kunlun Red Star of the Kontinental Hockey League. Throughout his professional career, he played for more than 1,300 NHL games for the New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins, Montreal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, and Florida Panthers. He also played with the Atlant Moscow Oblast of the KHL. Outside his ice hockey career, he is a licensed aircraft pilot.
Early life: Kovalev was born in 1973 in Tolyatti, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union. He was the first Soviet player to be drafted in the first round in the history of the NHL. He also played for his hometown team, Lada Togliatti.
